In Search of the Grail
In Search of the Grail is the second part of Basara’s cult novel The Cyclists’ Conspiracy. From the perspective of deeply rooted everyday myths, for Basara, the world is an open stage where life unfolds in all its controversial meanings. This is a novel of intense expressionist concentration, exploring the structure of identity, the adventure and interweaving of persecutory elements, and the constellations of human existence, the world, space, and time.
Svetislav Basara (Bajina Bašta, 1953) is a novelist, short story writer, and playwright. His short story collections include Stories in Disappearance (1982), Peking by Night (1985), Lost in the Supermarket (2008), Monkey Descriptions (2008), and Despair of the Mint (2016). His novels and novellas include Chinese Letter (1985), The Cyclist Conspiracy (1987), Looney Tunes (1997), The Rise and Fall of Parkinson’s Disease (2006), Fundamentalism of Stupidity (2009), The Beginning of the Rebellion Against the Dahijas (2010), Mein Kampf (2011), The Assassin’s Angel (2015), and Minority Report (2024). His plays include Boomerang, Oxymoron (2001), and New Stradija (2009). His essay collections include On the Edge (1987), The Tree of History (1995), Smokers of the Red Ban (2017), and Atlas of Pseudomythology (2019). He also published correspondence with Miljenko Jergović: Tush and Darkness (2014) and The Second Round (2015).
He is the recipient of the NIN Award for the novels The Rise and Fall of Parkinson’s Disease and Contraendorphin, as well as the Isidora Sekulić and Biljana Jovanović Awards for the novel The Assassin’s Angel.
His works have been translated into English, French, German, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Italian, and Macedonian.
