Yesterday, the fourth Festival of Slavic Literature began with an introductory event—a discussion with Serbian writer and director Vida Ognjenović and a presentation of her novel House of Dead Scents.

The event was opened with a welcome address by FSK director Dr. Andreja Rihter.  In her speech, she recalled the beginnings of the collection 100 Slavic Novels, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year and in which more than 100 translations of Slavic novelistic masterpieces have been published.  This was followed by a talk between Zora A. Jurič and the guest writer and a presentation of the novel The House of Dead Scents, which has just been published in Slovenian translation by Aleksandra Rekar in the collection.

The festival continues today with a guest appearance by Vida Ognjenović in Nova Gorica, then moves to Ljubljana, where Vida Ognjenović, Andreja Rihter, and Vlado Žabot will talk about the collection Sto slovanskih romanov (“100 Slavic Novels”) and its 20 years. Next week, Croatian writer Nada Gašić will be a guest at the festival. Presentations of her novel Water, Spider Web will take place in Ljubljana and Maribor.

At the end of the week, visitors are invited to join the guided tour of Lili Novy’s Ljubljana with with tourist guide Mateja Kregar Gliha and to Villa Zlatica, where they will learn more about Ivan Hribar and his literary contemporaries.

This year’s festival is being held in collaboration with four libraries: the France Bevk Public Library in Nova Gorica, the Maribor Library, the Ljubljana City Library, and the Maribor University Library.
