The 16th PIRANOVA Summer School Begins

Koper, 25-28 May – The Forum of Slavic Cultures, in collaboration with the European Museum Academy and the Koper Regional Museum, is organizing the 16th PIRANOVA International Summer School of Museology. This year’s event will be held from 25 to 28 May 2025 at the Koper Regional Museum.

The Summer School continues to uphold its core values of collaborative learning, knowledge exchange, and the sharing of ideas among experts, researchers, and students from around the globe. Through an interactive approach, it aims to cultivate specialized museological skills while promoting innovation and international networking.

The theme for this year, EXPANDING HORIZONS: Heritage Echoes in the Future of Museums, explores the intersection of cultural identity, heritage, migration, multiculturalism, and the digital evolution of museums. It underscores heritage as a dynamic force shaping the future of museum practices. Central to the discussions will be how heritage, echoing from the past, can impact present and future museum practices, and how to effectively recognize and utilize it in creating relevant, accessible, and sustainable museums.

Speakers from nine countries will contribute diverse perspectives on contemporary museological practices, including:

  • Dragana Lucija Ratković Aydemir (Muze d.o.o., Croatia) – a renowned museum consultant focusing on heritage interpretation and cultural destination development.
  • Dorian Koci – History Expert & English Lecturer, specializing in Museology, History, and Political Sciences.
  • Jakob Parby (Copenhagen Museum, Denmark) – Archaeologist and museum expert specializing in urban narratives and participatory museum approaches.
  • Malgorzata Waszczuk (Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Poland) – expert in historical research and interpretation of sensitive heritage, particularly in digital contexts.
  • Giacomo Sferlazzo (Migrant Museum Lampedusa, Italy) – artist, activist, and co-founder of a museum documenting personal stories of migrants and their Mediterranean journeys.

Participants from seventeen countries, including Europe, the USA, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, highlight the global significance and interest in this professional exchange.

The final excursion will take participants to Nova Gorica, the European Capital of Culture 2025. Highlights include a visit to Kromberk Castle with the Vladimir Makuc exhibition, the Tactile Gallery in the city center, and the Museum on the Border, guided by curators from the Gorizia Museum.
