Skopje Marks the 20th Anniversary of the 100 Slavic Novels Project

On 27 February 2026, the 20th anniversary of the 100 Slavic Novels collection was celebrated at the National and University Library “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Skopje.

The ceremony was opened by the library’s director, Jovica Nikčevski, who highlighted the institution’s role as a guardian and promoter of literary heritage, as well as the project’s importance in enriching Macedonian translation output. The audience was also addressed by Stanko Blagojević, Assistant Minister for International Cooperation and European Integration in the field of culture at the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, and Ms Irina Šokarovska, State Adviser for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of North Macedonia and a member of the Programme Council of the Forum of Slavic Cultures. Both speakers underscored the project as an example of successful regional cultural cooperation and sustained institutional support.

The programme also featured a literary panel dedicated to the achievements to date and future perspectives of the 100 Slavic Novels project. Participants included Mladen Vesković, editor of the collection, Slovenian author Gabriela Babnik, Serbian writer Vladimir Pištalo, and Macedonian writer Ermis Lafazanovski.

Translated novels published in Macedonian as part of the project were exhibited at the library, offering visitors a direct insight into the richness and diversity of contemporary Slavic literary production.

The celebration of this important anniversary was supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of North Macedonia.
