As part of the Creative Studio Berlin & BänferKartenbeck concept, the project involved designing and creating animations, films, and soundscapes for the entire exhibition at the Deutschlandmuseum. With over 25 explanatory films, interactive maps, and large-scale projections, the project brought an ambitious vision to life, offering visitors an immersive and educational experience.

Directed by Dorit Jeßner, a seasoned German filmmaker with 20 years of experience in film and media, this project truly represents the pinnacle of innovation and creativity in cultural heritage.

Codex 4D: Journey in Four Dimensions into the Manuscript – Italy

This project, developed by the Institute of Heritage Science at CNR and the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, offers a multidimensional journey into ancient manuscripts, using advanced technologies to preserve and present these delicate objects. Funded by the Lazio Region (POR FESR Lazio 2014–2020), the project brings manuscripts to life through virtual and augmented reality, blending science and culture in a unique way.

This innovative project has been recognized “for its groundbreaking work in making fragile historical manuscripts accessible to both scientific and general audiences, embodying the essence of ‘heritage in motion’ through innovation and preservation.”

In Our Care. The Keeper’s Choice – Portugal

Nine security guards from the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon share their personal choices of artworks from the Museum’s permanent collection, blending art, everyday life, and biography in a deeply moving series. Each documentary episode is a first-person narrative lasting 10 to 20 minutes. Directed by João Estrada, this project from the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon lets everyone experience art from a deeply human perspective, blending art, biography, and everyday life.

This exceptional project has been awarded “for its unique perspective in showcasing art through the eyes of museum security guards, offering a deeply personal and emotional connection to the artworks, with beautifully crafted films that bridge the classical and contemporary.”

Evolution of Telephones – Slovenia

Promoted by Muzej pošte in telekomunikacij and directed by Andreja Goetz, “Evolution of telephones” was created by students, who took viewers through the technological transformation of telephones. From the earliest devices displayed in museums to the modern smartphones we can’t live without today, the film highlights the evolution of communication, combining creativity and storytelling from a fresh, youthful perspective.

Judges said: “for its creative and engaging portrayal of the evolution of telephones, offering a visually captivating journey from historical devices to the smartphones we rely on today.”

Honourable Mention
National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War

Why they were honored: For their deeply moving and historically valuable videos, “Martyrology” and “Izyum. Liberation”, created with passion and high quality despite the adversities of war. These projects stand as a testimony to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and the crucial role of museums in defending freedom and independence.
Project description: Directed by Dmytro Chornyi and produced by Smart Movie“Izyum. Liberation” documents the museum’s expedition to the newly liberated Kharkiv and Donetsk regions in October 2022. Led by Director General Yurii Savchuk, the team collected evidence of the devastation caused by the Russian invasion, ensuring these war realities are preserved for future generations and museum exhibitions.

Heritage in Motion 2024 categories

Participants compete for prizes in the following four categories:

With a focus on 1. the opportunities given by the new technologies to promote the cultural heritage; 2. the experiential dimension as the distinctive feature of museums, historical places, and cultural heritage sites (for example immersive environments, multimedia installations, interactive spaces)
A new tool for the interpretation, study, promotion, and audience development of heritage sites and cultural institutions (for instance: VR/AR as a tool to explore the museums’ repositories).
