Venerini laski (The Venus Hair) begins at asylum hearings in Switzerland, where the protagonist—a court interpreter—records the testimonies of asylum seekers. His thoughts constantly drift toward the books he reads during the hearings, and his narrative is interwoven with passages from the diary of a famous Russian singer. These diary entries describe the political and personal upheavals experienced by the energetic artist during her long life in twentieth-century Russia. The Venus Hair is a novel about a crime without punishment, about war and peace, about love and truth, which can also be found in fictional stories.
Mikhail Shishkin (1961, Moscow) lives in Switzerland today and is considered one of the most important contemporary Russian authors. Among Russian writers, he is also regarded as the finest stylist and one of the most innovative prose writers.
His best-known novel is The Venus Hair (2005), which received Russia’s Big Book Award and the National Bestseller Award. The book has so far been printed in more than 50,000 copies and translated into eleven languages.
