Piranova 2026 Will Explore Ways of Interpreting Heritage

From 25 to 27 May, Koper will host the 17th edition of the International Summer School of Museology – PIRANOVA 2026, organised by the Forum of Slavic Cultures, the European Museum Academy, the Regional Museum Koper, and the Municipality of Koper.

This year’s edition will focus on different approaches to interpreting cultural heritage – exploring how heritage can be approached through language (including the interpretation and presentation of literary heritage), as well as through the use of new technologies and contemporary media. The programme will highlight two distinct yet complementary perspectives on heritage interpretation. Experts in the field will present current developments in museology, showing how language and digital tools can support interpretation, presentation, and audience engagement. Theoretical insights will be complemented by practical presentations and hands-on workshops.

The summer school will begin on Sunday evening, 24 May, with a welcome gathering for all participants. This will be followed by two days of lectures, discussions, and workshops organised into two thematic strands: Exhibiting with Words – Interpreting Heritage through Language and Museums in the Digital Age – Interpreting Heritage through Technology. On the third day, the summer school will conclude with a study excursion to Trieste.

Through lectures, discussions, and practical workshops, the summer school will provide participants with tools for critically reflecting on the role of museums in a changing world. Its main aim is to encourage dialogue among museum professionals, educators, and students interested in working in the field. Participants will take part in an international exchange of knowledge and experience, reflect on the social role of museums, and explore ways of remaining open to innovation while maintaining respect for tradition.

The organisers warmly invite museum curators, students specialising in museology, professionals working in the field, conservators, and all those interested in museums, museum practice, and cultural heritage to apply. The programme will be conducted in English.

Registration is open until 15 May, or until all places are filled. Students and members of the Forum of Slavic Cultures are eligible for a special discount. In addition, early applicants will receive a 20% Early Bird discount, valid until 10 April.

*The PIRANOVA 2026 programme is currently in preparation and will be published on 10 February.
