In the Year of Zofka Kveder, we are organising a series of conversations titled In Her Footsteps, held in the garden of Villa Zlatica. Katja Mihurko will be in conversation with contemporary women who carry forward the ideas of the writer.
Zofka Kveder was a pioneer in the Slovenian cultural space in many respects. As a writer, she addressed themes in an unembellished manner that often provoked strong reactions from society. Her works placed both women and men—especially those who challenged social expectations—at the forefront. As a passionate advocate of women’s rights, she authored numerous articles and lectured at various events on pressing social issues of her time. Together with her contemporaries, she laid the foundations for changes in the social role of women.
How is her legacy realised today? How is she perceived as a predecessor by a writer who, among other themes, critically examines contemporary patriarchy; by a philosopher who played a key role in introducing foundational feminist texts and the first Slovenian feminist journal; and by a philosopher and political scientist whose research focuses on social justice and who is best known to the public as an environmental activist? In this series, Dr Katja Mihurko will speak with her guests about the mark left by Zofka Kveder, the significance of female predecessors, the challenges they face in their critical responses to everyday social realities, and how feminist traditions can be built a century after Kveder’s death.
