The Balkan Road Trip – A Musical Journey Across the Balkans

The tour of the Slovenian Flute Orchestra, titled The Balkan Road Trip, offers a diverse and dynamic musical journey featuring works by Slovenian composers from different generations—from the Renaissance master Jacobus Gallus to contemporary composers such as Leon Firšt and Anže Rozman, among others. The programme is further enriched by one composition from each of the host countries—Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina—creating a vivid and direct intercultural dialogue.

At the heart of the programme is a new work by the young Slovenian composer Leon Firšt, The Balkan Road Trip, which musically intertwines the energy of Balkan rhythms, characteristic melodic colours and contemporary creative imagination. The piece symbolises a journey—both geographical and artistic—bridging tradition and modern expression.

A special additional dimension of the concert programme is the presentation of the oldest known musical instrument in the world—the Neanderthal flute, approximately 60,000 years old, discovered in Slovenia. The instrument will be presented during the performance of a work by Davorin Jenko, giving the project a strong symbolic, educational and promotional dimension. In this way, the programme goes beyond the usual concert framework, presenting Slovenian musical heritage across its broadest historical arc—from prehistory to contemporary artistic creativity.

The Balkan Road Trip is therefore more than a concert—it is a story about place, identity, collaboration and the unifying power of music.
