The 70th regular meeting of the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (SC IWC 70) took place in Bled from 27 April to 8 May 2026. The event brought together 150 experts from 45 countries to Slovenia. It highlighted the importance of international cooperation, scientific diplomacy, and the connection of different cultures in addressing global challenges.
Such conferences, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs within the framework of scientific and cultural diplomacy and the addressing of global challenges, represent an important reference platform. They support the development of the green and circular economy as well as the blue economy, contributing to a more sustainable future for the planet.
As culture plays an important role in international cooperation – both in business and scientific environments – participants were also introduced to this dimension through music and film at the closing of the meeting.
In the accompanying evening programme, the Forum of Slavic Cultures and the Municipality of Duplek also took part. They presented a short film and a musical performance inspired by Slavic mythology and dedicated to themes of mutual understanding and solidarity.
During the moderation of the event, thanks were expressed to Director Andreja Rihter. Her message was also highlighted, noting that Slavic history has been marked by numerous political differences and conflicts, yet culture remains the force that continually guides the Slavic space toward peaceful coexistence and cooperation.
